About the Organization
The International Potato Center (CIP) is a global research-for-development organization with a focus on improving livelihoods through research on potato, sweet potato, and other root and tuber crops. CIP is seeking a dynamic Associate Scientist to contribute to the implementation of the ‘Developing Local Seed Potato Production System in West Bengal’ project funded by the Government of West Bengal.
Job Summary
The Associate Scientist will play a key role in supporting early-generation and commercial seed potato production in West Bengal. The selected candidate will work closely with public and private sector stakeholders to enhance local seed production capacity, improve seed quality, and promote best agricultural practices among smallholder farmers.
Key Responsibilities
● Develop and implement strategies for enhancing early-generation and commercial seed potato production.
● Collaborate with public and private sector entities to build local capacity in seed potato production and supply chain management.
● Conduct research on seed quality management, disease control, and soil health improvement.
● Provide technical support and training to farmers on good agricultural practices, including soil fertility management and on-farm seed quality improvement.
● Monitor and evaluate project activities to ensure compliance with expected outcomes and recommend necessary improvements.
● Prepare reports, publications, and technical documents related to project implementation and findings.
● Coordinate with local government authorities, research institutions, and private seed enterprises to strengthen the seed potato ecosystem in West Bengal.
● Ensure sustainable adoption of improved technologies and practices among smallholder farmers.
Qualifications and Experience
● Ph.D. or Master’s degree in Agriculture, Horticulture, Plant Breeding, Agronomy, or a related field.
● 5-7 years of relevant experience in seed systems, crop research, or agricultural development projects.
● Experience in potato seed production and quality management is highly desirable.
● Strong understanding of good agricultural practices, soil health management, and disease control in potato cultivation.
● Demonstrated ability to work with government agencies, private sector stakeholders, and farming communities.
● Proficiency in research methodologies, data analysis, and scientific reporting.
● Excellent communication skills in English and Bengali.
● Willingness to travel within West Bengal as required by the project.

● Full-time position based in West Bengal, with 50% time spent in Mohit Nagar and 50% in Kolkata.
