Position Summary:
To analyze incoming ingredients, in-process, finished goods, environmental samples, air monitoring samples, water samples, and human swabs to ensure the product and workplace conform to microbiological specifications laid down by the organization.
Responsibilities and Accountabilities:
QUALITY CHECKS:
- Ensure daily plating of samples.
- Check that all finished products comply with the company’s specifications.
- Take necessary samples as laid out per the QC procedure.
- Grade all finished products as laid out by the QC sampling procedure; record information on relevant physical and electronic documentation.
- Perform adequate testing procedures on individual finished products.
- Perform environmental swabs of lines on a monthly basis.
- Perform air monitoring samples in the facility on a quarterly basis.
- Perform water analysis for microbiology as per company-defined frequency.
- Daily reporting in electronic documentation.
- Responsible for external laboratory testing of various ingredients and finished products, as per company-defined frequency.
ACCEPT/HOLD/REJECTION:
- Ensure that the raw/in-process/finished products have been tested appropriately to meet the required specifications.
- Communicate any changes in quality with the QC and Production Executive.
- Pass requisitions for the accepted finished goods.
- Make rejection notes for finished products that exceed satisfactory limits of specifications.
- Communicate with the production manager, plant manager, and store manager in case of any rejection or hold made.
NEATNESS OF WORKPLACE:
- Ensure that the entire microbiological laboratory remains in hygienic condition and good repair at all times.
- Ensure that the equipment in this section is clean at all times.
- Dispose of waste after autoclaving in the correct containers and remove/empty into appropriate waste areas.
MAINTENANCE & GENERAL DUTIES:
- Report any defects in equipment performance to the Supervisor.
- Carry out simple adjustments to keep equipment running at optimal efficiency.
- Replace consumable parts as required and perform other reasonable duties.
- Perform any other reasonable work-related tasks as instructed by the QC Manager.
- Prepare and maintain the QA budget with respect to microbiological costs.
SAFETY:
- Ensure no loose wires or open electrical panels (only engineers have access).
- Keep all floors dry to minimize slips.
- Use appropriate Personal Protective Equipment (PPE).
TRAINING & DEVELOPMENT:
- Conduct frequent training for awareness of food safety systems related to microbiology, hygiene, and GMP.
- Schedule internal audits at regular intervals.
AUDITS:
- Conduct audits, including closing out audit findings, creating audit reports, and determining corrective and preventive actions.
- Assist the Quality Assurance Manager by acting as audit leader of assigned microbiology audits.
OTHER DUTIES:
- Implement and monitor 5S in the Micro lab.
- Calibrate instruments in-house.
- Add new procedures, work instructions, and formats in QA procedures.
- Conduct outsourced calibration for all QA instruments.
- Prepare monthly reports and trend charts.
Requirements:
Academic: Must have: Degree in Microbiology
Related Work Experience: Minimum 2 years in Quality Control Lab
Working Relationships and Key Contacts:
Internal:
- Manager QA / QA Executive: For day-to-day reporting
- Store Executive / Store Area Leader: For product quality and product life cycle
- Production Executive / Production Area Leader: For product quality and product life cycle
External:
- External QA Auditor: To explain how QA parameters are implemented and follow the verification/validation process
Competencies:
Critical TECHNICAL (Function-Specific) Competencies:
- Knowledge of lab equipment like Incubators, Hot Air Oven, Autoclave, Water Baths, Laminar Air Flow, etc.
- Knowledge of basic microbiological testing procedures like Total Plate Counts, Coliforms, E. coli, Salmonella, Yeast and Mold, Pseudomonas, Listeria, etc.
- Awareness of GMP practices.
- Proficiency in MS Office 2000 or later, particularly Excel and Word, and ideally Access or similar database to a basic level.
