Brief Job Overview

This non-supervisory role is responsible for executing critical editorial and scientific communication functions for USP documentary standards publication. The Associate Scientific Editor’s primary role is to review USP documents for accuracy, structure, style, grammar, syntax, referencing, and readability. The role involves collaboration with scientific experts to ensure quality, clarity, and consistency of the content, supporting USP’s mission by producing high-quality publications on schedule.

How will YOU create an impact here at USP?

• Edit scientific materials across USP publications to maintain high-quality documentary standards.
• Incorporate corrections and communicate with scientific experts as needed for content quality and clarity.
• Copyedit content for readability and USP style compliance.
• Ensure correct grammar, syntax, and spelling; prepare documents for production.
• Develop specialized knowledge for assigned publication content and tasks.
• Apply XML tagging to scientific content.
• Conduct additional editorial reviews for USP publications as needed.
• Proofread scientific content, making minimal style and formatting changes post-editorial stages.
• Uphold the intent of scientific experts by maintaining a high-level view of each standard.
• Review and update documentation for current process alignment.
• Coordinate with Publications and science divisions on editorial and production tasks.
• Perform other related duties as required.

The successful candidate should have a strong understanding of USP’s mission, dedication to excellence through inclusive behaviors, and the ability to build credibility with stakeholders. Additional competencies and experience include:

Education:

• Bachelor’s degree in English, Journalism, Communications, or life sciences, or equivalent training and experience.

Experience:

• 0-2 years of relevant experience.
• Experience in book and/or journal editing in electronic formats.

Additional Desired Preferences:

• Strong knowledge of grammar, spelling, and application of in-house style guides.
• Energetic self-starter with the ability to manage tight deadlines and multitask effectively.
• Demonstrated creativity and flexibility in a deadline-driven publishing environment.
• Proficient in time management, organization, and interpersonal communication (written and verbal).
• Strong analytical and technology skills.
• Proficient in Microsoft Office Suite, Adobe Acrobat Professional, HTML/XML editors, and file-tracking programs.
• Familiarity with MS Teams, SharePoint, and virtual communication tools (Outlook, Teams, Jabber, Slack).
• Experience with content management systems and workflow procedures.

Abilities:

• Navigate complex publication systems and processes.
• Effectively multitask and manage independent research with an understanding of escalation needs.
• Build effective team relationships through participation and feedback receptiveness.
• Engage in training/mentoring with senior staff.
