5. Application Process

  1. Applications for PhD programmes should be submitted only online through the Application Portal:
    https://www.iitg.ac.in/admission
  2. Applications will not be accepted in any other mode.
  3. Before submission of applications, please go through the information provided on this admission website carefully.
  4. Candidates need to register only once on the Application Portal. Under the same login, candidates can submit applications to multiple disciplines. However, the application fee should be paid separately for each application.
  5. Submission of the online application is a three-step process. Unless all the three steps are completed, the application will not be treated as complete. Incomplete applications will not be considered for processing.
    • Step-1: Personal information, including educational qualifications.
    • Step-2: Selection of the programme.
    • Step-3: Online payment of the application fee.
  6. For submission of applications to different disciplines, candidates must repeat step-2 and step-3.
  7. Application & Processing Fee: In step-3 of the online application process, each candidate needs to make payment of the application (processing) fee online as per the following:
    • All Female Candidates: Rs.300/-
    • All Transgender Candidates: Rs.300/-
    • All SC/ ST/ PwD Candidates: Rs.300/-
    • All Other Candidates: Rs.600/-
  8. Applications without successful (online) payment of the application fee shall be rejected.

6. Selection Process

  1. Applications of the candidates that are complete in all respects are considered valid.
  2. The respective Department/School/Centre will process the valid applications discipline-wise and/or specialization-wise.
  3. MEC: The applicants who do not satisfy the minimum eligibility criteria and norms will not be considered for the shortlisting/selection process.
  4. Shortlisting: The Institute reserves the right to consider a limited number of eligible candidates for the selection process by setting additional shortlisting criteria based on the performance in GATE/NET/CEED, grades/marks in the qualifying degree examination, and/or other educational qualifications starting from Class 10.
  5. The shortlisted candidates shall be considered for the selection process.
  6. Selections for PhD programmes shall be based on the performance of candidates in the previous educational qualifications and in the written test and/or interview conducted by the respective Department/School/Centre.
  7. Mode of Selection: The selection for a particular discipline will be conducted in one of the following modes, as decided by the respective Department/School/Centre:
    • Offline: All stages of the selection process shall be completely offline, for which the candidates have to come to the campus and participate in the selection process.
    • Online: All stages of the selection process shall be completely online through video conferencing (MS Teams, G-Meet, etc.). Candidates need not come to the campus for any stage.
    • Hybrid: Some stages of the selection process will be online and some will be offline. At every stage, the selection process will be either online or offline for all candidates shortlisted for that stage.
    • Example: In stage-1, all shortlisted candidates shall face screening interviews online. In stage-2, candidates further shortlisted in stage-1 will be called for final interviews, which will be held offline on campus.
      The mode of selection might vary across different departments, and schemes within the same department. The mode of selection for a particular discipline will be announced with the schedule of selections.
  8. For PhD programmes, shortlisting and selection may be done specialization-wise by the respective Department/School/Centre.
  9. Institute Assistantship Test for MTech Level Applicants of PhD programme (IATMLA):
    • There is a provision for availing Institute Assistantship for a PhD student without GATE/CEED but having MTech/MDes/MS(R) qualifications. If shortlisted, they may be allowed to appear in a written test on a prescribed syllabus.
    • The candidates qualified in the written test will be considered for the selection process.
    • Pre-requisite: Application for the PhD programme must be under the “Regular” category.
    • Qualification: MTech/MDes/MS(R) who have NOT qualified GATE/CEED.
    • Clarifications:
      • This test is not required for those with MTech/MDes/MS(R) who have qualified GATE/CEED at some point.
      • This test does not apply to candidates with BTech/MSc/MA/MBA qualifications, who require a valid GATE score.
    • Written Test Modalities:
      • Mode: Offline test conducted at IIT Guwahati campus.
      • Duration: 2-3 Hours.
      • Qualifying Criteria: 40% for GEN or GEN-EWS, 36% for OBC-NCL, 26% for SC/ST/PwD.
      • Syllabus: Discipline-wise syllabus for IATMLA available on the portal.
  10. Applicants should regularly check the website and respective department portals for information regarding shortlisting and selection. IIT Guwahati will not send personalized notifications or be responsible for delayed responses.
  11. Shortlisting and selection results will be announced on the Application Portal. Applicants can log in to the portal to check the results.
  12. For any queries on shortlisting/selections, applicants can contact the DPPC/SPPC/CPPC Secretary or the Head of the Department/School/Centre. Contact details are available on the website.

7. Results and Acceptance of Seats

  1. Candidates can check updates on shortlisting/selections on the Application Portal.
  2. Candidates who have participated in the selection process can log in to the portal to check their result status, whether qualified, offered a seat, or on a waitlist.
  3. Candidates offered seats must accept them by paying the required fee before the deadline, or the seat will be offered to those next on the waiting list.
  4. Selection is provisional, subject to the submission of all relevant documents at the time of admission.
  5. Selection may be canceled at any time if the candidate is found to be in violation of institute ordinances, rules, or regulations.
  6. Selected candidates awaiting qualifying degree results must submit original pass certificates and mark sheets as per timelines set by the Academic Affairs Section.
  7. If a candidate wishes to withdraw after paying the requisite fee, they can do so via the application portal by 27th December 2024.
  8. Withdrawal requests received by 27th December 2024 will incur a deduction of Rs. 1,000/- from the deposited fee. For late requests, only the refundable portion of the fee will be returned, and refunds will be processed in March 2025.

  10. IIT Guwahati will NOT send any hard copy notification by post regarding admission offers or other communications.
