Position Summary:
The Senior Bioinformatics Support Scientist (BSS) will partner with customers, front-line field personnel, distributors, and internal resources to provide post-sales support, internal technical support, technical training, troubleshooting, and complaint resolution for Illumina bioinformatic solutions and data. This role requires a solid understanding of common bioinformatics tools and approaches for Next Generation Sequencing. The BSS will also provide technical support in pre-sales engagements as needed. This position is a hybrid role with both field-based and in-house responsibilities.
The region of coverage includes the Emerging Markets district of Illumina, comprising mainly countries in the Indian Sub-continent, SEA, Middle East, Africa, and Turkey. This role demands strong troubleshooting, communication, time management, situational awareness, poise under pressure, and collaboration. Building and maintaining relationships with internal and external stakeholders across the region—including Sales, Service, Support teams, distributors, and customers—is essential.
Position Responsibilities:
- Provide technical support or consultations in pre-sales processes as requested.
- Assist internal and distributor sales and support teams in understanding customers’ bioinformatics/analytical needs to support, recommend, or develop solutions using Illumina’s bioinformatics software portfolio.
- Provide onsite or remote customer training on Illumina’s bioinformatics software portfolio.
- Collaborate with field-based support staff to manage customer accounts and troubleshoot complaints related to Illumina’s instruments and bioinformatics software.
- Assist internal and external teams in developing bioinformatics skills of support staff, including regional distributors, to enhance bioinformatics expertise and complaint-handling capabilities.
- Participate in early testing of new software products and assist in planning regional support processes for these products.
- Help develop and review customer-facing and internal documentation and support resources.
- Provide Voice of Customer (VOC) feedback to internal groups to improve products and the customer experience.
Requirements:
- At least 5 years of experience in bioinformatics, including technical support, user support, or project/product management
- Hands-on experience managing and analyzing datasets using bioinformatics tools and pipelines, including command line and graphical user interfaces, particularly with next-generation sequencing data
- Strong understanding of bioinformatics concepts (e.g., alignment, variant calling methods) needed for developing workflows/pipelines for NGS data analysis
- Proficiency in R, Perl, Python, or other scripting languages for bioinformatic analyses
- Experience with high-performance computing or cloud-scale data processing
- Excellent troubleshooting and problem-solving skills
- Outstanding written and verbal communication skills, along with strong facilitation and presentation abilities
- Excellent interpersonal skills and ability to work collaboratively in a matrixed organization
- Strong organizational skills with the ability to rapidly balance priorities in a fast-paced environment
- Dedication to providing exceptional customer service
- Willingness to travel up to 50% as business needs dictate

Preferred Experience, Education, and Skills:
- Advanced degree or PhD in Genetics, Biology, Bioinformatics, Computer Science, or related technical area preferred
- Field-based experience in a customer-facing role, preferably in biotech or clinical/pharma industry
- Background in human disease genetics, ideally in cancer, rare diseases, or prenatal testing
- Experience with Illumina sequencing and array technologies
- Familiarity with Illumina Bioinformatics Solutions and NGS analysis tools, such as Dragen, ICA, Emedgene, Illumina Connected Insights, Clarity LIMS
- Knowledge of wet-lab molecular biology techniques
- Experience with LIMS and laboratory processes related to next-generation sequencing
- Prior experience working with CRM systems, such as SFDC
- Familiarity with APIs, web services, and building pipelines/workflows in cloud environments (e.g., CWL or other scientific workflow languages)
- Knowledge of AWS infrastructure
