Project Name: Investigating the Gut Microbiome and Host Epigenomic Profiles in Preterm Stunted Infants at 6 months of Age in a Low to Mid Socioeconomic Neighborhood of North India

Principal Investigator’s name: Dr. Souvik Mukherjee

Research Description:

Stunting is a global problem; 25% of children less than 5 years are stunted. It is represented as the percentage of children, whose length (height) for age is less than -2 S.D. below WHO’s Child Growth Standard median. India has the highest number of stunted children (40.6 million; 38.4% annually), representing one-third of the global

burden. Preterm born and low birth weight babies who survive are more likely to face developmental retardation, poor immunity, and consistent infections resulting in stunting. The prevalence of stunting in children at 6 months of age is around 16-20% and it is even higher in preterm infants (35%). Preterm babies are at a higher risk for anthropometric short stature during childhood. Hence, in our study, we will focus on the preterm born stunted infants only. The gut microbiome colonization significantly differs between preterm and term infants and is thought to play a major role in shaping their initial immunity. The gut microbiome composition slowly develops from birth and any imbalance in them can be linked with reduced immunity and future health problems. Other studies have shown that specific gut microbial pathways produce metabolites that can alter host gene expression profiles by epigenetic modifications. This gut microbiome-host epigenome axis impacts several metabolic functions of the human body such as nutrients absorption, regulation of intestinal hormone secretion, host immunity, and inflammatory processes. Here, we propose a study focusing on metagenomic profiles and their role in shaping the DNA methylation patterns for identification of predictive/prognostic biomarkers of stunting in preterm infants at the first six months of life.
