Our first case study features Aditya Iyer. Aditya’s journey from humble beginnings to becoming a leading figure in biotech is a testament to the power of passion and perseverance. Let’s dive in!

Biotechnology is a constantly changing field that requires a strong desire to learn, a solid education, and practical experience with complex research methods. Aditya Iyer, a senior research development scientist at Amyl Therapeutics, is a great example of someone who has these traits. His story provides important lessons and inspiration for those who want to work in biotechnology.

Early Academic Pursuits and Foundation

Aditya’s interest in proteins led him to focus on his studies. He finished his Master’s degree in Technology and biotechnology at the Indian Institute of Technology in Guwahati, earning a high grade of 9.63 out of 10. This strong academic background helped him prepare for his career in the challenging field of life sciences.

Doctoral Research and Initial Discoveries

Aditya started his PhD at the University of Twente in 2011 and finished in 2016. He studied Biochemistry, Biophysics, and Molecular Biology. His work was about how a protein called alpha-synuclein (aS), which is linked to Parkinson’s disease, affects the way fat-like substances in cell walls gather together. He used a special kind of cell wall model called supported lipid bilayers to show that when these proteins clump together, they slow down the movement of fats in the cell wall and cause damage. This research is important because it helps us understand more about diseases that affect the brain and nerves.

Postdoctoral Research: Expanding Horizons

Aditya kept doing his research at the University of Groningen as a Postdoctoral Research Fellow. There, he worked on many projects in the Membrane Enzymology group, which was led by Prof. Bert Poolman. His tasks involved making a special glowing sensor to watch proteins in living cells and improving how much protein is made by adjusting the surface properties. He also studied how bacterial cells react to very salty conditions. These projects not only made him more knowledgeable but also showed that he could come up with new ideas and handle various research problems.

Professional Achievements and Contributions

Aditya’s professional journey is marked by significant achievements across various roles:

  • Senior Research Development Scientist at Amyl Therapeutics

Aditya works as a Senior Scientist at Amyl Therapeutics in Liège, Belgium. Since June 2022, he has been studying how to reduce the harmful effects of protein clumps in Alzheimer’s and Parkinson’s diseases. He is skilled in using techniques like spectroscopy and microscopy to study amyloid fibers and understand how they work, which is important for creating new treatments. Aditya is good at working with others and explaining his research, which helps him share ideas and present his findings at scientific meetings.

  • Scientist and Study Director at QPS Netherlands B.V.

Before working at Amyl Therapeutics, Aditya was a Scientist and Study Director at QPS Netherlands B.V. During his time there, he learned a lot about bioanalytical techniques, such as creating and checking bioanalytical tests and running studies on how drugs act in the body (PK studies). He needed to know all about rules (GLP and GCP) and how new drugs are made, from testing on animals to early human trials. His experience with both big and small drug molecules gave him a good grasp of the drug-making business.

Skills and Expertise

Aditya’s career shows he has a lot of different skills and knowledge. He knows how to use many tools and methods, such as:

  • Spectroscopy and Microscopy: He can use high-tech microscopes and spectroscopy to look at how proteins interact with fats and how proteins clump together.
  •  Biochemical Assays: He is good at using different tests to study proteins and see how they affect diseases.
  • Bioanalytical Techniques: He is skilled in using methods like LC-MS/MS to help find new drugs.
  • Project Management: He has shown he can handle several scientific projects at once, working well with others to get things done on time and well.
  • Communication and Leadership: He can explain complicated science to many types of people and lead teams with different specialities.
