Academic Beginnings and Specializations

Dr. Swarup completed her Bachelor of Science degree from Isabella Thoburn College in Lucknow, where her schooling started. She thereafter attended Lucknow University and graduated with a Master of Science in Botany/Plant Biology. She concentrated significantly more on plant genetics during her doctoral studies at the Forest Research Institute in Dehradun. Her solid academic background in plant sciences was only significant since it gave her the tools and knowledge base needed to take on difficult biotechnology-related problems.

International Exposure and Research

Her postdoctoral research in Applied Genetics and Biotechnology, which she carried out from 1986 to 1987 at the John Innes Centre in Norwich, UK, is much appreciated.That experience truly helped her widen her studies. All it did was extend Dr. Swarup’s horizons, introduce her to international research trends and methodologies, and position her for future jobs in biotech administration and policy.

A Pioneering Role in Government

Dr. Swarup joined the Department of Biotechnology, Government of India, in August 1989, and rose from Scientist to Secretary. During her tenure, she initiated and executed many national programs related to biotechnology and other fields, some of which are landmark biotechnology plans of the years 2001, 2007, 2015, and 2021. Under her leadership as Chairperson of the Biotechnology Industry Research Assistance Council, more than 60 incubators were created, and 5,000 entrepreneurs came up, therefore giving impetus to the biotech sector in India at a tremendous magnitude. In times of crisis, leadership

Under the COVID pandemic, Dr. Swarup’s leadership was tested through the COVID Vaccine, Diagnostic, and Genome Sequencing Mission. Her deft handling of that crisis not only mitigated the aftermath of the pandemic in India but portrayed very rightly the role that competent leadership plays in the wake of significant global health catastrophes.

Honours and Recognition

1. Lifetime Achievement Award for Biotech Policy Maker (2021)

Dr. Swarup received the Lifetime Achievement Award in January 2021 in recognition of her exceptional work as a biotech policy maker. Her dedication to biotechnology over many years is demonstrated by this prize, which she received in recognition of her pivotal role in influencing laws that promote scientific advancement, creativity, and research.

2. Smt. Chandaben Mohanbhai Patel VASVIK Award for Women in Scientific & Chemical Science & Technology (2020-21)

In January 2020, Dr. Swarup received this award as a thank you for her efforts to support women in the sciences. Her wide-ranging effect across numerous scientific domains is demonstrated by the prize, which acknowledges her contributions to female equality in research as well as to chemical science and technology.

3. Leadership in Agriculture Research Award (2019)

In recognition of her contributions to agricultural research, Dr. Swarup received the Agriculture Research Contribution Award in January 2019. Given her expertise in plant genetics and her contributions to agricultural biotechnology, this prize has a great deal of significance.

4.NASI’s Dr. P. Sheel Memorial Award (2018)

The National Academy of Sciences, India presented Dr. Swarup with this award in January 2018 in recognition of her outstanding scientific achievements and her role as a mentor to the upcoming generation of scientists. Her impact as a leader and mentor in the scientific community is highlighted by this award.

5. The 2018 TWAS Regional Office Award for Science Diplomacy

For her services to scientific diplomacy, Dr. Swarup was also given the TWAS Regional Office Prize in January 2018. This award recognizes her efforts to strengthen the bonds between science and diplomacy and to advance international scientific collaboration.

In January 2017, Dr. Swarup received this award from the Indian government as a token of appreciation for her mentorship in fostering entrepreneurship in India.   1. They come from different science background and take all the opportunity in Biotechnology and say that there is a huge scope in this field…..While people from biotechnology background wonder…where’s the scope? Post Docs in the field too remain unemployed or remain exploited at a mere salary!

  4. Biotech has very few job. If any biotech students get some special not justify this subject. This subject and PhD after it ruined the life my bright students.

    Any subject is not good or bad it is all about government policies and ability of government to create jobs in specific field.

    People who take this subject are fooled by both government and private Institute and sometimes blogs like this too.
