National Centre for Biological Sciences (NCBS) – Tata Institute of Fundamental Research (TIFR) is a premier research institute engaged in life sciences research across various scales. With significant expansion in the Ecology and Evolution programs, NCBS has developed the Collections Facility to carry out museum-based research in different fields. This research is primarily supported by fieldwork across various biogeographic zones in India, collecting specimens and related genetic material for centralized storage at NCBS.
Position: Facility-In-Charge, Collections Facility
Number of Posts: 1
Age Limit: 35 years as of 01.01.2024 (subject to relaxation as per GoI norms)
This appointment is for a fixed-term position initially lasting one year, with annual renewal subject to performance assessment outcomes. The role offers consolidated pay based on qualifications and experience, in line with institutional guidelines.
The goal of the Collections Facility is to serve as a long-term archival repository for specimens. NCBS seeks to appoint an in-charge to oversee
the Collections Facility, who will be responsible for:Research and outreach activities:
- Curating specimens, ensuring their maintenance, and acquiring new specimens for the collections.
- Leading and participating in collections expeditions to expand existing collections.
- Leading the recognition process of Research collections as a ‘National repository’.
- Organizing taxonomy training workshops for students and faculty across various taxa.
- Supporting NCBS outreach efforts by engaging visiting students from schools, colleges, universities, and the public.
- Building research partnerships and MoUs with institutions to leverage NCBS Research Collections.
Consultancy:
- Offering scientific advice and assistance to researchers engaged in ecology and evolution studies at NCBS and its close collaborators.
The position involves professional and technical responsibilities for the curation (maintenance, operations, and growth) of NCBS research collection. Curatorial duties include specimen collection and preservation, formal accession of specimens into the collection, taxonomic identification, maintenance of data files, specimen loan responsibilities, and preparation and submission of proposals for external funding.
The Facility-In-Charge is expected to engage in scientific research, as approved by their supervisor/FAC, including project design, methodology development, data collection, result analysis and interpretation, and dissemination of findings. They will provide expertise in their scientific specialty to the institution, other State agencies, and the public.
Outreach and education activities may include giving public lectures on science-related topics, organizing or participating in technical workshops or public programs, offering tours, and publishing popular articles or other public-directed media. The role may also involve supervising students, interns, and volunteers.
Essential Qualifications: PhD in Life Science, specializing in ecology, systematics, and evolution.
Experience: 2-3 years of experience in taxonomy and field research.
Consolidated Salary: Salary will be commensurate with experience and qualification.
