Applications are invited for a “Project Assistant” position in DBT funded project in the Dept. of Biological Sciences (DBS), IISER Kolkata, Mohanpur, Nadia, West Bengal 741246. This
position is purely temporary and co-terminus with the project mentioned above.

Project Title: “Assessing the immuno-therapeutic potential of type III interferons-IFNs
(IFN-λ) against Avian Influenza virus (AIV) infections in murine and chicken’s model.”
Principal Investigator: Dr. Amirul I. Mallick

Desirable Qualifications: Prior experience in virus propagation, purification and quantification will be preferred. In addition, candidates with experience in cell culture, molecular biology techniques, and immunological assays (ELISA, Western blot, FACS, Immunofluorescence) are desirable. Prior experience in animal experimentation (mice/chickens) will be preferred.

Essential qualification: MSc in Biotechnology/Zoology/Molecular biology/Microbiology or
related field in Life Sciences. Preference will be given to NET/GATE/equivalent National Level Tests qualified candidates.

Salary: INR 20,000 per month plus HRA as per the rule.

While my experience is primarily with bacteriophages, I believe the principles of virus handling and quantification are transferrable to other types of viruses as well.

2. Question: Have you worked with cell culture, molecular biology techniques, and immunological assays before? Please provide an example.

Answer: Yes, during my research internship, I worked on a project where we studied the effects of a specific protein on immune cell activation. I conducted cell culture experiments using human primary immune cells, treated them with various stimuli, and then performed techniques like Western blotting to analyze protein expression changes. Additionally, I conducted ELISA assays to quantify cytokine secretion in response to different treatments. This experience enhanced my skills in cell culture, molecular techniques, and immunological assays.

3. Question: Are you familiar with animal experimentation, specifically with mice or chickens? Please elaborate on your experience.

 Answer: While I haven’t worked extensively with animals, I did have the opportunity to participate in a project that involved mice handling during my undergraduate coursework. I assisted in maintaining mouse colonies, administering treatments, and collecting biological samples for further analysis. This exposure has given me a basic understanding of animal care and experimental protocols, which I’m confident can be further developed as part of this project.

4. Question: Can you discuss your familiarity with the techniques mentioned in the project, such as ELISA, Western blot, FACS, and Immunofluorescence?

 Answer: Certainly, I have theoretical knowledge and some practical experience with these techniques. During my coursework, I learned the principles behind ELISA and Western blotting and even performed these assays in a laboratory setting. As for FACS and Immunofluorescence, I’ve studied their applications and workflows extensively, although I haven’t had the opportunity to perform them hands-on yet. I’m eager to learn and expand my skills in these areas through this project.

5. Question: How does your academic background and any relevant qualifications align with the requirements of this position?

 Answer: My academic background in Biotechnology and my MSc degree have provided me with a strong foundation in molecular biology, microbiology, and related life sciences. I have also qualified the NET examination, which demonstrates my dedication to academic excellence. During my studies, I engaged in coursework and projects that directly relate to the skills needed for this position, including cell culture, virus handling, and immunological techniques. My prior experiences have equipped me to contribute effectively to the project’s goals and to quickly adapt and learn new techniques as required.
