Call for applications for the position of a Post-doctoral Research
Associate under a
CEFIPRA Funded Project at the Department of Biological Sciences, IISER
Kolkata

Applications are invited for the post of a Post-doctoral Research Associate in a CEFIPRA sponsored project titled “Using machine learning to understand the impacts of water quality and habitat disturbances on fish community structure and patterns in lower East-Himalayan streams of India and in La Moselle stream in France” in the group of Dr. Anuradha Bhat, Associate Professor at the Department of Biological Sciences, IISER Kolkata.

Name of the Post: Post-doctoral Research Associate

No. of Posts: 01

Name of thee Project: “Using machine learning to understand the impacts of water quality and habitat disturbances on fish community structure and patterns in lower East-Himalayan streams of India and in La Moselle stream in France”

Name of the PI

: Dr. Anuradha Bhat

About the Project: This is an Indo-French collaborative project with Dr. Baba Issa Camara at the Université de Lorraine in France. The project will involve development of predictive models using different regression based and machine learning methods to understand the environmental, habitat and climatic drivers of freshwater fish distributions across temperate and tropical stream ecosystems. The research work at IISER Kolkata would involve a combination of field and laboratory-based studies to combine species distribution data with physiological and behavioural studies to address impact of specific water quality parameters on fish. This will be combined with detailed statistical and mathematical modelling methods to understand occurrence and abundance of fish communities in native habitats.

Tenure: Initially for a period of 1 year, extendable up to 3 years depending on the satisfactory performance of the incumbent.

Age limit: Must not be over 35 years as on 18 August, 2023 which can be relaxed for certain reserved categories as per the rules of the Government of India.

How to apply: Applications including a CV, a list of publications, a brief description of past research and a statement of purpose in not more than 400 words explaining the candidate’s scientific interest in joining the aforementioned position and two referee names should be sent by email to: [email protected]. Please use the subject line of the email as: ‘Application for postdoctoral research position in CEFIPRA project.’

Last date for application: 18 August 2023.

Interview: Short-listed candidates will be invited for an online interview.

Terms and Conditions:

  1. The selection for the postdoctoral research position will be made based on the past academic record as well as the performance in the interview. The decision of the selection committee will be final.
  2. The appointment of the candidate will be governed by the terms and conditions of the
funding agency particularly applicable to the said project.
  3. The selected candidate will have to join duty immediately on receipt of the offer.

Here are five possible interview questions that can be asked in the technical round for the Post-doctoral Research Associate position along with their answers:

  1. Question: Could you provide an overview of your PhD research and how it relates to the objectives of this project? Answer: My PhD research focused on understanding the population dynamics of aquatic ecosystems, particularly fish communities, in response to environmental changes. I employed advanced mathematical and statistical models to analyze ecological data. This experience aligns well with the project’s goal of using machine learning to comprehend the impacts of water quality and habitat disturbances on fish community structures.
  2. Question: How do you plan to integrate your expertise in mathematical and statistical analysis with fieldwork in this project? Answer: I intend to employ my proficiency in mathematical and statistical methods to analyze the complex ecological data obtained from fieldwork. By combining these analytical tools with the insights gathered from field studies, I aim to develop comprehensive predictive models that capture the relationships between water quality parameters and fish distributions.
  3. Question: Could you describe your familiarity with regression-based and machine learning techniques, and how you envision applying them to this project? Answer: I have a solid foundation in regression-based and machine learning techniques from my previous research. I plan to utilize these methods to build predictive models that can reveal the intricate interplay between environmental variables, habitat conditions, and fish community patterns. By training the models on collected data, we can gain insights into the drivers of fish distributions.
  4. Question: The project involves collaborating with an overseas partner. How do you envision effective communication and coordination with international researchers? Answer: Effective communication is key to successful collaboration. I propose regular virtual meetings and video conferences to discuss project progress, share findings, and brainstorm solutions. Additionally, I would suggest establishing a shared digital platform for data and resource exchange to ensure seamless coordination between the teams.
  5. Question: How would you approach integrating physiological and behavioral data with environmental factors to address the impact of water quality on fish communities? Answer: Integrating physiological and behavioral data requires a multi-faceted approach. I plan to conduct controlled laboratory experiments to gather physiological data under varying water quality conditions. Concurrently, I will conduct field observations to capture behavioral responses of fish. By correlating these data sets with environmental parameters, we can unravel the nuanced effects of water quality on fish communities.

These questions aim to assess the candidate’s technical knowledge, research experience, problem-solving skills, collaboration abilities, and practical approach to addressing the project’s objectives.
