Possible interview questions with answers for the position of Senior Research Fellow at VIT:

1. Can you explain your experience with NGS analysis and how it relates to the ICMR Funded Project’s objectives? Answer: Certainly! In my previous role as a Bioinformatics Researcher, I extensively worked with Next-Generation Sequencing (NGS) data to analyze various biological phenomena. I am well-versed in processing raw NGS data, performing quality control, read mapping, variant calling, and differential gene expression analysis. This experience aligns perfectly with the objectives of the ICMR-funded project, where we aim to understand the impact of COVID-19 on the host transcriptome using NGS techniques.

2. How have you used machine learning in your previous research, and how do you think it can contribute to our understanding of human genetic factors associated with susceptibility to SARS-CoV-2 infection? Answer: In my previous projects, I employed machine learning algorithms for tasks like classification and prediction of disease-related genes and pathways. I believe machine learning can play a vital role in this ICMR-funded project by analyzing large-scale genomic datasets and identifying key genetic factors that influence an individual’s susceptibility to SARS-CoV-2 infection. By leveraging machine learning, we can uncover complex associations and patterns in the data, leading to valuable insights into host-virus interactions.

3. How do you manage and organize large-scale biological datasets in your work? Can you describe your experience with database management? Answer: In my work, I utilize various database management systems to store, retrieve, and organize biological datasets efficiently. I have experience working with both SQL and NoSQL databases, which allows me to handle structured and unstructured data effectively. For instance, in one of my projects, I used a relational database to store genomic variants and associated metadata, making it easily accessible for downstream analysis. Proper database management is crucial for this ICMR-funded project as it involves handling extensive transcriptomic and genetic data.

4. Could you provide an example of how you applied R and Python to solve a computational biology problem in your previous research? Answer: Of course! In a recent project, I investigated the gene expression patterns of cancer-related pathways in response to specific treatments. I used R to preprocess the gene expression data, perform statistical analysis, and visualize the results. Additionally, I employed Python to develop a machine-learning model that predicted treatment response based on gene expression signatures. This combined usage of R and Python enabled me to gain comprehensive insights into the molecular mechanisms underlying the treatment’s effectiveness.

5. As a Senior Research Fellow in this ICMR-funded project, you may have to work independently as well as lead a team. Can you share an experience where you demonstrated effective leadership skills? Answer: Absolutely! In my previous role as a Senior Research Associate, I led a team of three junior researchers in a project investigating the genetic basis of a rare inherited disorder. I organized regular team meetings to discuss progress, delegate tasks based on individual strengths, and provide guidance whenever needed. By fostering open communication and encouraging independent thinking, I ensured the team collaborated effectively and achieved project milestones within the stipulated timeframe. Effective leadership is essential for success in this role, and I am confident in my ability to lead and collaborate with fellow researchers.
