Smart Insulin by IIT Bhilai & SNU Researchers

A pioneering development in the field of diabetes care has been accomplished by scientists from the Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) Bhilai, in partnership with colleagues from Shiv Nadar University, creating a revolutionary innovation named “intelligent insulin.” This formulation, produced from naturally plentiful resources, has shown remarkable effectiveness in the management of diabetes. The research, helmed by Dr. Suchetan Pal from the Department of Chemistry at IIT Bhilai, offers significant potential for enhancing the lives of those battling with diabetes, according to a press statement from IIT Bhilai.

At present, individuals suffering from type 1 diabetes and advanced stage type 2 diabetes must depend on regular insulin injections to control their blood sugar levels. This traditional approach is not only uncomfortable and painful but also exposes the individual to the risk of hypoglycemia, a potentially fatal condition marked by low blood sugar levels.

The revolutionary intelligent insulin formulation presents an extended release time, remaining effective for up to two days, in comparison to the regular insulin which lasts only 12 hours. Encouraging results were seen in experiments on diabetic rats before progressing to human trials. If these trials are successful, patients may

benefit from reduced frequency of insulin injections, thereby improving their overall life quality.

The new formulation will continue to be tested for its possible use in creating low-cost, long-acting insulin and could even contribute to the development of an artificial pancreas. This path-breaking work has been published in the prestigious journal ACS Applied Materials and Interfaces, earning international acclaim for its potential to revolutionize diabetes care.

Funding for this research project has been provided by a number of sources, including IIT Bhilai, the HDFC-CSR grant, the Department of Science and Technology (DST), and the Department of Biotechnology (DBT) Innovative Young Biotechnologist Award.

As diabetes increasingly becomes a worldwide health concern, this development offers a ray of hope for millions of individuals dealing with the disease, potentially leading to a major advancement in diabetes management and contributing to a healthier future.
