PhD Eligible For Assistant Professor Recruitment, NET/SET/SLET Not Required

Following the release of revised minimum requirements for direct recruitment to the position of assistant professor in all universities and colleges on July 5, the University Grants Commission (UGC) has issued a clarification regarding these criteria.

UGC Chairperson, M Jagadesh Kumar, provided a clarification via Twitter, stating, “For individuals holding a Master’s degree, the minimum requirement for direct recruitment as an Assistant Professor is UGC-NET/SLET/SET. Additionally, individuals with a PhD degree awarded in accordance with UGC Regulations are eligible for direct recruitment to the Assistant Professor position and are exempt from UGC-NET/SLET/SET.”

Kumar also mentioned that higher educational institutions can use

suitable criteria outlined in the regulations for appointing Assistant Professors, depending on the number of applications received within a specific discipline.

On Wednesday, the UGC issued a notification stating that NET/SET/SLET would be the minimum criteria for direct recruitment to the Assistant Professor position in all Higher Education Institutions (HEIs). The UGC Chief further tweeted that a PhD qualification for appointment as an Assistant Professor would be optional starting from July 1.

“The UGC has amended clause no. 3.10 of the general conditions, which previously mandated a PhD qualification starting from July 1, 2023. It is important to note that the detailed eligibility criteria provided for various disciplines have not been altered. It is explicitly mentioned that NET/SLET/SET is the minimum requirement for direct recruitment of an Assistant Professor for those without a PhD degree,” clarified the UGC statement.
