Bombay Natural History Society (BNHS)

Job description for recruitment of Project Associate (Social Science)

Position: Project Associate (Social Science)

Number of positions: One

Project title: Strengthening climate resilience in biodiversity & local communities dependent on high-altitude rangelands in the Indian Himalayas

Project Duration: 3 years (2023-2026; 15 months pilot phase)

Project funding: Eicher Group Foundation

Project Location: Himachal Pradesh, India

Project background:

Climate change is impacting various ecosystems globally in different ways. One such important ecosystem is rangeland, on which millions of people are dependent for critical resources and livelihoods, such as water, food, livestock grazing, medicinal plants, dung, fodder and fuel wood. The rangelands are also key habitat for many of the planet’s wild herbivores and carnivores of conservation importance. Variations in temperature and precipitation, in turn, are influencing changes in rangeland vegetation, with poorly understood implications on domestic and wild herbivores. Local communities dependent on rangelands and living in close proximity to wilderness will need to adapt using locally appropriate solutions in order to achieve long-term livelihoods security. Managers and policy makers concerned with rangelands and biodiversity conservation shall need to undertake inclusive and innovative measures that ensure human – wildlife co-existence. This, in turn, shall lead to rangelands and in turn livestock productivity that will continue to support livelihoods of local people, while conserving rangelands and dependent wildlife. A long-term project to monitor climate change, changes in rangeland vegetation, livestock and wildherbivore is proposed in Himachal Pradesh, northern India. The aim is to strengthen resilience of the rangelands and local people through community-led conservation, livelihoods improvement initiatives and capacity building. The project shall contribute to national and global efforts towards sustainable ecological and social security in the face of climate change.

Project goal: Climate resilient rangelands, biodiversity and local community in the Indian Himalayas

Project objectives:

  • Strengthening climate-resilience in agro-pastoral community through conservation & livelihoods actions
  • Assessing impact of climate change on rangeland vegetation
  • Understanding impact of climate change on status of livestock and wild-herbivores
  • Training/capacity building of local community institutions towards strengthening climate
    resilience

Possible Interview Questions:

  1. Question: Can you tell us about your experience working with local communities on social and livelihood aspects? How have you collaborated with stakeholders to implement outreach and awareness programs? Answer: In my previous role, I worked closely with local communities to understand their needs and develop sustainable solutions. I collaborated with government and non-government stakeholders to organize workshops, training sessions, and awareness campaigns. By fostering strong partnerships, we were able to implement projects that addressed social and livelihood challenges effectively.
  2. Question: Describe your research or work experience in the field of social science or human ecology. How have you applied your knowledge to contribute to the field? Answer: During my post-graduation and subsequent research experience, I focused on studying the social dynamics of communities in relation to ecological systems. I conducted extensive fieldwork, interviews, and surveys to understand the social and cultural aspects that influence community resilience and adaptation to environmental changes. I have published research papers and reports that contribute to the body of knowledge in this field.
  3. Question: Could you share an example of a project where you assessed the impact of climate change on rangeland vegetation or livestock and wild herbivores? Answer: In a previous project, I conducted a comprehensive study on the impact of climate change on rangeland vegetation in a specific region. I collected data on vegetation composition, growth patterns, and changes over time using both field observations and remote sensing techniques. By analyzing the data, I identified the effects of climate change on plant species diversity, biomass, and distribution. This information helped in developing strategies for sustainable land management and conservation.
  4. Question: How have you contributed to capacity building and training of local community institutions in the context of climate resilience? Answer: As part of my role, I have facilitated capacity building workshops and training programs for local community institutions. I developed training modules on topics such as climate change adaptation, sustainable resource management, and livelihood diversification. Through interactive sessions and participatory approaches, I empowered community members to take ownership of their resilience strategies and provided them with the necessary tools and knowledge to implement sustainable practices.
  5. Question: Can you discuss your experience in data analysis and writing technical reports? How have you effectively communicated research findings to a diverse audience? Answer: I have experience in collecting and analyzing qualitative and quantitative data using various statistical software and analytical techniques. I have worked with large datasets, conducted data validation, and generated meaningful insights. Additionally, I have written technical reports, summarizing research findings in a clear and concise manner. I also presented research outcomes at conferences and engaged with stakeholders through presentations, ensuring effective communication of complex information to diverse audiences.

Remember to tailor your answers based on your own experiences and achievements. These questions aim to assess your expertise, relevant skills, and ability to contribute to the specific project and organization. Good luck with your interview!
