Job description for recruitment of Project Associate (Ecology / Biology)

Position: Project Associate (Ecology / Biology)

Number of positions: One

Project title: Strengthening climate resilience in biodiversity & local communities dependent on high-altitude rangelands in the Indian Himalayas

Project Duration: 3 years (2023-2026; 15 months pilot phase)

Project funding: Eicher Group Foundation

Project Location: Himachal Pradesh, India

Project background:

Climate change is impacting various ecosystems globally in different ways. One such important ecosystem is rangeland, on which millions of people are dependent for critical resources and livelihoods, such as water, food, livestock grazing, medicinal plants, dung, fodder and fuel wood. The rangelands are also key habitat for many of the planet’s wild herbivores and carnivores of conservation importance. Variations

in temperature and precipitation, in turn, are influencing changes in rangeland vegetation, with poorly understood implications on domestic and wild herbivores. Local communities dependent on rangelands and living in close proximity to wilderness will need to adapt using locally appropriate solutions in order to achieve long-term livelihoods security. Managers and policy makers concerned with rangelands and biodiversity conservation shall need to undertake inclusive and innovative measures that ensure human – wildlife co-existence. This, in turn, shall lead to rangelands and in turn livestock productivity that will continue to support livelihoods of local people, while conserving rangelands and dependent wildlife. A long-term project to monitor climate change, changes in rangeland vegetation, livestock and wildherbivore is proposed in Himachal Pradesh, northern India. The aim is to strengthen resilience of the rangelands and local people through community-led conservation, livelihoods improvement initiatives and capacity building. The project shall contribute to national and global efforts towards sustainable ecological and social security in the face of climate change.

Project goal: Climate resilient rangelands, biodiversity and local community in the Indian Himalayas

Project objectives:

  • Strengthening climate-resilience in agro-pastoral community through conservation & livelihoods actions
  • Assessing impact of climate change on rangeland vegetation
  • Understanding impact of climate change on status of livestock and wild-herbivores
  • Training/capacity building of local community institutions towards strengthening climate
    resilience

To Apply:

  1. Resume highlighting educational qualifications, work experience, publications, and relevant awards/achievements.
  2. Statement of purpose (SoP, max. 500 words) emphasizing on candidate’s relevant skill set and how skills can be used to implement the project.
  3. Peer-reviewed publications.
  4. Email resume, SoP and publications as a single PDF file to [email protected] with a copy to [email protected], mentioning ‘Project Associate (Ecology / Biology) recruitment, BNHS’ in the email subject line.

Application deadline 13th July 2023

Essential qualification: Graduation and Post-Graduation in Zoology / Biology / Life Science / Environmental Science with a minimum of 60% marks.

Desirable Qualification:

  • A minimum of two-three years of work experience after post-graduation in applied
ecology, monitoring impacts of climate change on vegetation and wildlife, and related
topics, preferably in the Indian Himalayas.
  • Experience in sampling vegetation, wildlife species distribution and population; data
analyses and visualization using statistical software (e.g. R, SPSS, etc.); and writing
    technical reports.

Possible Interview Questions:

  1. Can you provide an overview of your experience in applied ecology and monitoring the impacts of climate change on vegetation and wildlife? Answer: I have worked for two years after my post-graduation in the field of applied ecology, specifically focusing on monitoring the impacts of climate change on vegetation and wildlife. During this time, I have conducted field sampling of vegetation and studied the distribution and population dynamics of wildlife species. I am proficient in data analysis and visualization using statistical software such as R and SPSS. Additionally, I have written technical reports on my findings and have publications in peer-reviewed journals.
  2. How familiar are you with the Indian Himalayas and its ecological dynamics? Answer: I have a strong familiarity with the Indian Himalayas and its ecological dynamics. Through my previous work and research, I have gained valuable experience in studying the ecosystems of the Indian Himalayas, including the rangelands and their associated biodiversity. I am aware of the specific challenges posed by climate change in this region and the importance of implementing adaptive measures for the conservation of rangelands and the well-being of local communities.
  3. Can you describe any projects or initiatives you have been involved in that focused on strengthening climate resilience in agro-pastoral communities? Answer: In a previous project, I actively contributed to strengthening climate resilience in agro-pastoral communities. We implemented conservation and livelihood actions that aimed to enhance the adaptive capacity of local communities in the face of climate change. This involved working closely with community institutions, conducting capacity building programs, and promoting sustainable practices. I closely monitored the outcomes of these initiatives and assessed their effectiveness in improving the resilience of the communities and their natural resources.
  4. How do you approach data analysis and reporting in your research work? Answer: In my research work, I approach data analysis using statistical software such as R and SPSS. I ensure the accuracy and reliability of the data by applying appropriate statistical tests and methods. I then interpret the results, drawing meaningful conclusions and identifying patterns or trends. When it comes to reporting, I prioritize clear and concise communication, presenting the findings in a logical and structured manner. I have experience in writing technical reports that effectively convey the research outcomes.
  5. Can you discuss a time when you faced challenges during a field research project and how you overcame them? Answer: During a field research project focused on monitoring the impacts of climate change on vegetation and wildlife, we encountered logistical challenges due to difficult terrain and limited accessibility. To overcome these challenges, we developed a detailed fieldwork plan, collaborating closely with local communities and experts in the area. We made necessary arrangements for transportation and equipment, adapting our sampling methods to suit the conditions. By effectively coordinating the team and staying adaptable, we successfully completed the fieldwork and obtained valuable data for our research.

Note: These interview questions are hypothetical and based on the job description provided. Actual interview questions may vary depending on the interviewer and the specific requirements of the position.
