Applications Scientist

We’re looking to hire an Applications Scientist to join us in our mission to improve human health and quality of life through the development, distribution, and application of advanced computational methods.

Schrödinger is on the cutting edge of computer-aided drug discovery and materials science. We set the record for the largest and fastest cloud computing run, and our software suites continue to revolutionize the design of therapeutics and materials. FEP+, WaterMap, Glide, Maestro, and LiveDesign are just a few examples of the tools we’ve created.

As a member of the India Applications Science team, you’ll provide scientific support for customers ranging from large pharmas to biotechs, as well as academic institutions. Alongside your fellow Applications Scientists, you’ll provide guidance to our life science customers and help them to tackle various challenging drug discovery problems.

Who will love this job:

  • A computer-aided design enthusiast (both in theory and application) – specifically, someone with solid experience in structure-based drug design
  • An excellent communicator and presenter with superb organizational skills
  • A dedicated scientist interested in advancing drug discovery research
  • A creative person who enjoys helping others solve problems
  • A self-motivated team player who thrives in a cross-functional environment

What you’ll do:

  • Provide scientific support to current and prospective customers, which includes demonstrating the optimal use of our life science software suites, facilitating interactions between customers and product development teams, and providing general scientific guidance
  • Engage in cutting-edge scientific research to continuously develop personal expertise and establish best practices for customers
  • Work cross-functionally with Product Managers, Account Managers and the Marketing team to improve business strategies
  • Publish scientific papers and present at conferences

What you should have:

  • PhD in computational chemistry, bioinformatics, or a related field with 4-10 years of experience
  • Post-doctoral research and/or relevant experience in the commercial sector
  • A solid understanding of the drug discovery process
  • Experience in one of the following: structure-based drug design, molecular dynamics simulations/enhanced sampling/free energy calculation methods, ligand-based drug design, chemoinformatics, quantum mechanics, and/or structural modeling
  • Willingness to travel
  • Python programming experience and medicinal chemistry knowledge are a plus

Applications Scientist role at Schrödinger is calling your name and if you are wondering what sort of interview questions can be asked so check out the bottom of the page.

  1. What is your experience with structure-based drug design? Can you give an example of a project where you used this approach?

Answer: As an Applications Scientist with experience in structure-based drug design, I have worked on several projects where I used molecular docking techniques to identify potential drug candidates. One example is a project where I designed inhibitors for a protein target implicated in cancer. I used Glide, one of Schrödinger’s software suites, to generate a library of potential inhibitors and then optimized the top hits using FEP+.

  1. How do you ensure effective communication with customers who have different levels of expertise in computational chemistry?

Answer: Effective communication with customers is key to providing scientific support. I tailor my communication style to the customer’s level of expertise and I am always willing to explain complex concepts in simple terms. I also use visual aids, such as graphs and diagrams, to help convey scientific information.

  1. Can you give an example of a challenging drug discovery problem you helped a customer solve? What was your role in the solution?

Answer: I recently worked with a customer who was trying to design a selective inhibitor for a protein target implicated in a rare genetic disorder. The target had a complex binding site, which made it difficult to design inhibitors with high affinity and selectivity. I used WaterMap, a software suite developed by Schrödinger, to identify hotspots in the binding site and then used Glide to dock potential inhibitors. I worked with the customer to interpret the docking results and helped them select the most promising compounds for further optimization.

  1. How do you stay up to date with the latest advancements in computational chemistry and drug discovery?

Answer: Staying up to date with the latest advancements is crucial for an Applications Scientist. I attend conferences and workshops, read scientific papers, and participate in online forums and discussions. I also engage in cutting-edge scientific research to continuously develop my personal expertise and establish best practices for customers.

  1. How do you balance scientific rigor with customer needs and timelines?

Answer: Balancing scientific rigor with customer needs and timelines is a critical aspect of the Applications Scientist role. I prioritize scientific rigor, but I also understand the importance of meeting customer needs and deadlines. I work closely with customers to understand their goals and timelines, and I always strive to deliver high-quality results within the agreed-upon timeframe.
