GATE 2022 Not Postponed – Plea To Postpone GATE 2022 Dismissed

The GATE 2022 – Graduate Aptitude Test in Engineering Exam 2022 has been scheduled to be held on the 5th, 6th, 12th and 13th of February 2022, the notification for which was released back in July 2021.

With the rising COVID cases in the country and due to the third wave rearing its ugly head across the country, students were up in arms and making impassioned pleas to the Indian Institute of Technology, IIT Kharagpur to postpone the exams which are scheduled to begin in less than 48 hours. However, IIT Kharagpur didn’t respond to the demands leading to matters being taken to the courts.

Over 9 Lakh students have registered to appear for the exams and 20,000 have signed an online petition to postpone the exams.

However, in a possible landmark decision, The Apex Court of India on Thursday proceeded to dismiss the plea seeking the postponement of GATE 2022 Exams.

It has also been reported that the bench comprising of Justices DY Chandrachud, Surya Kant and Vikram Nath stated that prior to 48 hours of commencement of exams, taking any action on the petitions will lead to uncertainty

.

“The plea for postponement of the GATE examination barely 48 hours before the scheduled date on February 5, 2022, is replete with a propensity for chaos and uncertainty in the lives of the students who have registered for the examination. There is no overarching reason that this court in the exercise of its jurisdiction under Article 32 of the Constitution should supplant the duties and functions of the regulatory authorities who have taken a decision to hold the examination,” the bench said.

The bench also noted that if the exam conducting authority wants to postpone the exam, it can take a call.

Justice Chandrachud added that there is no certainty that the situation will improve in a month, keeping this in mind we cannot play with the careers of all the students who have been preparing for this exam.

IIT Kharagpur for their part has released a letter to aid students to reach the exam centre without much difficulty owing to the restrictions imposed and also a video on safety protocols to be followed.

Candidates may use this letter, in case required, to reach the examination centre
