New coalition to maintain and preserve COVID-19 data
The IIT-Madras, IIS, ISI, and Semantic Web India, a private technology company from Bengaluru, have joined forces to further continue the works of a significant COVID-19 Data Website, which was managed by a group of volunteers and has now closed up.
The site, www.covid19india.org, provided a complete view of the pandemic across India by giving data on confirmed, active, and recovered cases, tests, and deaths. Recently, the website had also started to display vaccination administration status for both single-dose and fully vaccinated individuals.
The portal was operated by volunteers using a crowd-sourcing model and had been a valuable source of data for the common people and researchers studying the pandemic. The organizers lately declared that they would cease services after October 31, 2021.
The new alliance of academic institutions and Semantic Web India will proceed to update the data and make it available on a new portal, www.incovid19.org.
According to Prof. V. Kamakoti, Assoc. Dean, IIT Madras, the new alliance will offer data comparable to that provided by
the earlier portal, however, with some changes. It will compile all of the COVID-19 information that has been made public by different government entities and provides a one-stop-shop in a standardized form. The granularity of www.covid19india.org data points extended to the districts of most states. Historical data must be maintained to help future pandemic research.Prof. Siva Athreya, ISI, Bengaluru, stated that www.covid19india.org has been available from the inset of pandemic and has tracked the pandemic across India, which is an invaluable benefaction.
This new initiative would ensure the availability of data on COVID-19 testing, confirmed, recovered, active cases, and fatalities from all 36 Indian states and UTs until March 2022. Furthermore, the integrated data will be made available to the common people via the public repository, with proper APIs coordinating those already available at https://www.covid19india.org/ to assure minimal interruption to applications and consumers of information.
Dr. Asha Subramanian, Founder, and CEO of Semantic Web India, stated that the coalition would make every effort to automate the process and give data continuity at the state/district level where ever feasible, utilizing published references at state government websites after October 31, 2021.
