First Indian Covid-free Place – Andaman & Nicobar Islands
Andaman & Nicobar Islands are India’s first Union territory or state to be free of COVID-19 infections. The islands currently have zero active cases. The islands had reported 4,932 coronavirus cases in total and 62 resulting deaths. On Tuesday, the health ministry’s website announced that the last 4 Covid patients on the islands had been cured of the infection.
Meanwhile, the number of cases in Kerala crossed 50% of the country’s total coronavirus cases on Tuesday. 11,024 fresh cases have been reported in India, out of which 51.8%, i.e., 5,716 cases were from Kerala alone. As per Times of India data collected from state governments, out of the 1,61,000 active cases in the nation, those in Kerala came up to 69,157, making it the state with the highest number.
Monday saw a nine-month low with 8,584 daily cases. However, the fall in the number of cases on Mondays is majorly due to staff shortage and reduced tests conducted during the weekend. We can still rejoice over the falling of fresh cases that were 11,000 in number on Tuesday compared to data from the previous week’s Tuesday that had 12,732 reposted cases
.Against the backdrop of First Indian Covid-free place emerging, Tuesday also saw a rise in the death toll (112) compared to the previous day. The nine-month low on Monday was also seen in the death toll (100). On Tuesday, one good thing was the report of Delhi having the lowest death toll in 9 months (2). The highest number of deaths is still seen in Maharashtra, which reported 30 additional deaths on Tuesday. However, only 1,927 cases were seen, the lowest in 8 days. Mumbai saw a decrease for the 2nd day in a row, with lesser than 400 reported cases. Maharashtra saw a drop in active cases, which were 41,586 in number, with Mumbai reporting 5,530 cases.
One in 10 tests gave positive results for coronavirus in Kerala. This is indicated b the state’s high test positivity rate of 10.8%. Tuesday saw a report of an addition of 16 deaths in the state. However, the Kerala state health department reported an 8.3% decline in January’s last week than the previous weeks’ number of cases.
