What is the Joint CSIR-UGC NET examination?

Joint CSIR-UGC NET is a national level test conducted for finding the aptitude of Indian applicants for Assistant Professor or Lectureship (LS) & Junior Research Fellowship (JRF) within Indian colleges and universities. CSIR (The Council of Scientific & Industrial Research) has assigned the duty of organizing this computer-based test (CBT) to the National Testing Agency or NTA (National Testing Agency). Applications for CSIR-NET are invited online twice annually all over India, usually in December & June. Check CSIR NET Eligibility For JRF & LS before applying.

This fellowship is approved by the R&D and Govt. research institutes, PG colleges, IITs, Universities, and other organizations. Only bonafide Indian nationals can apply for this entrance exam.

The CSIR NET exam is conducted in five different subjects. 

  1. Life Science
  2. Chemical science
  3. Mathematical Science
  4. Physical Science
  5. Earth Science

What Is CSIR NET?

CSIR-UGC NET qualified individuals are qualified for Assistant Professor/Lectureship, subject to meeting the cut-offs provided by UGC. The fellowship for the exam is a fixed tenure and doesn’t mean a guaranteed job. 

Requirements For CSIR-UGC NET application

for an applicant is mentioned below. 

I. CSIR NET Educational Criteria / CSIR NET Eligibility For JRF & LS – Who can apply for the CSIR NET Life Science / Chemical Science Exam?

  • Students registered in integrated MS-Ph.D. course
  • Applicants having B.Sc.(Hons)/ M.Sc./ Integrated BS-MS/ MBBS/ B.Pharma/ B.Tech/ BE/ BS(4 years) or an equivalent degree 
  • A minimum of 55 % for OBC, General-EWS/General, and 50 % for ST/SC application and PwD (Person with Disability)
  • Applicants registered for M.Sc. or having finished 10+2+3 years of the above-mentioned qualifications on the ending date of online submission are qualified to apply in the RA (Result Awaited) section. These applicants have to additionally submit an attestation form signed by the HOD of the institution they have appeared or are appearing

II. What is the Age Limit For CSIR NET Aspirants?

  • Assistant Professor/LS(Lectureship): No upper age limit
  • JRF: 28 years to the max. It is relaxable till 5 years for female candidates/PwD/ST/SC and 3 years for OBC candidates

What is the Fellowship Offered After Qualifying CSIR NET Exam – CSIR NET Fellowship Details / Emoluments

An amount of 31,000 per month is granted for the initial two years and an additional amount of ₹20,000 annually to the Institution/University. After two years, if the Fellow is enrolled for Ph.D., the stipend will be upgraded to SRF with an increment of ₹4000 to the previous amount on the third and following years accordingly. Otherwise, the stipend amount will be continued as the same for the third year and stopped accordingly.

What to choose – CSIR NET JRF Or CSIR NET LS? Options Available For CSIR NET Applicants

Applicants can choose either Assistant Professor/ LS (Lectureship) or JRF (Junior Research Fellowship) in their online application. If he/ she qualifies for JRF and meets the requirement for LS/Assistant Professor, they can consider both. Also if the JRF qualified person is over-aged, they will be considered for LS/Assistant Professor. 

CSIR NET Exam Pattern & Syllabus For Life-Science

There are three sections in the exam, the first part is common for all subjects with general aptitude-related questions, the second part with subject-concerned MCQs, and the third part with logical questions to test the analytical skills of the candidate. The examination is in Hindi or English medium with a duration of 3 hours.
