The International Max Planck Research School for Heart and Lung Research (IMPRS-HLR) is the leading educational platform of the Max Planck Institute in Bad Nauheim, Germany.
IMPRS-HLR is jointly operated by the Justus Liebig University (Gießen), the Goethe University (Frankfurt), as well as the Max Planck Institute for Heart and Lung Research (Bad Nauheim). The graduate program offers studies in the field of heart, vessel and lung biology and covers high-level science in development, remodeling and regeneration, stem cell biology, developmental genetics and translational research.
The structured curriculum of the school offers interdisciplinary lectures, workshops, method and career development seminars as well as the participation in international conferences and annual retreats. The international and interdisciplinary approach of the program promotes cross-frontier thinking, communication and scientific networking.
In contrast to the broad PhD program, the conducted research thesis is focused on the scientific interest of the chosen research group at the MPI for Heart and Lung Research or at one of the affiliated universities. The combination of specialized knowledge and interdisciplinary education within our PhD program provides an excellent foundation for a future career.
Information about the Doctoral Program:
The International
Max Planck Research Schools (IMPRS) have become an essential part in the translational education of Ph.D. students. Talented junior scientists are offered the opportunity to earn a doctorate under excellent research conditions.Doctoral fellows will participate in a three-year professional graduate school program including seminars, methods courses and retreats and will benefit from the advanced scientific offerings of the institute and the universities. A thesis committee will provide feedback and guidance and mentorship for future career development. For their research projects doctoral students are supplied with generous funding.
Successful candidates will be able to choose a research project from one of the research groups. Depending on qualifications and the selected projects, doctoral students may be eligible to register for one of the four doctoral degrees offered, including PhD, Dr. rer. nat., Dr. hum. biol., and Dr. med.

Who can apply?
We are looking for:
- Authentic desire and drive to commit to a three-year doctoral program

- Solid English language ability, written and spoken as well as capability to work with English publications

- Master’s degree or equivalent in biology, biochemistry, medicine, bioinformatics or related by October

2. Secondary school leaving certificate
Your secondary school leaving certificate (equivalent to ‘high school’ or German ‘Abitur’).
3. Academic records
Submit your official transcripts of academic records from every postsecondary institution attended at least one year as a full-time student. Academic records should give information on the type and content of courses taken (Diploma supplement) and the grades you received. Your rank in class should be noted whenever possible. If the institution does not issue records in German or English, original language records must be submitted with translations. At this stage of the application process you can submit non-certified documents.
4. Curriculum Vitae (CV)
including birth date, nationality and gender.
5. Proof of English language ability
If your native language is not English, proof of an adequate command of spoken and written English is required for admission.
Proof can be provided either by:
a) a TOEFL certificate (TOEFL.org)
(Score requirements: Paper based: 570+ ; Computer based: 230+ ; Internet based: 90+)
b) an IELTS certificate (IELTS.org)
(Score requirements: band 6.5+)
c) a Cambridge Certificate in Advanced English (CAE)
d) Applicants who took part in an undergraduate program in English or German are asked to provide a suitable certificate from their faculty.

- why you wish to become a member of the IMPRS-HLR,
- your preparation for this field of study, and
- your future career plans.
Please describe the area of natural science you find most interesting, your previous research experience, and other aspects of your background and interests which may aid the admission committee in evaluating your attitude and motivation for the program.
Admission procedure:
General issues:
Admission to the IMPRS-HLR is competitive and solely carried out through a central selection procedure.
Please note, that applications can only be accepted via our application data base within the scheduled deadlines. Late or incomplete applications will not be further considered. For admission to the IMPRS-HLR, participation in the face-to-face assessment center in Bad Nauheim is indispensable.
All applications received on time will be subjected to a multi-step evaluation procedure.
Evaluation of applications:
The initial evaluation will consider the completeness of the application, the quality and degree of adaptation of the motivational letter, the performance during the university degree, English language ability as well as experience in the lab.
Applications that meet the primary requirements are forwarded for further assessment by faculty members. The focus will be on the suitability of subjects studied and achievements in the scientific field. Candidates will be short-listed for invitation to the face-to-face assessment center in Bad Nauheim.
During the face-to-face assessment center, candidates will have several interviews with faculty members. Besides the evaluation of competence and fit, research interests and experience are matched to the IMPRS-LHR research groups. Candidates will be asked to give a 5-minute presentation (plus time for questions) of former scientific work.
Admission offers:
Offers are made one to two weeks after the assessment center. Offers in general include affiliation to a particular research group.
