Job description :
- Perform molecular diagnostic procedures including deoxyribonucleic acid (DNA) and ribonucleic acid (RNA) extraction and quantitation from clinical specimens, all aspects of the polymerase chain reaction (PCR) and reverse transcriptase (RT)-PCR analysis, restriction enzyme digestion, gel electrophoresis and hybridization according to established molecular laboratory protocols.
- Perform new molecular diagnostic procedures after they have been validated/standardized/verified by senior technical staff.
- Assist to perform additional special procedures / techniques such as DNA sequencing, fragment analysis, temperature gradient gel electrophoresis, pulse field gel electroporesis (PFGE), heteroduplex analysis, real-time PCR and Luminex based assays as required.
- Perform laboratory procedures by operating a variety of laboratory equipment, apparatus and instrumentation.
- Maintain equipment by following preventive maintenance protocols. Notify the supervisor of any malfunction.
- Prepare reagents, standards and quality control material to be used for test procedures.
- Use the laboratory computer for patient data entry, retrieval and preparing laboratory worksheets and reports.
- Enter daily workload statistics into the laboratory information system.
- Independently analyse/interpret data and recognize abnormal patterns in molecular diagnostic results, prepare and evaluate reports in preparation for issue.
- Maintain standardization and quality control of test procedures and monitor test results.
- Report unusual or questionable test results to the supervisor.
- Ensure that STAT and priority tests are assayed and reported promptly and in accordance with established protocols.
- Monitor laboratory supplies and stocks.
- Orient new technologists, medical technology students and residents in the use of molecular techniques by demonstration and verbal instructions.
- Develop, evaluate and implement new techniques with the guidance of senior technical staff and laboratory scientists.
- Maintain current knowledge in the field of medical laboratory technology in order to recommend new applications and contribute improvement in technical activities of the area by performing duties such as attending courses and lectures as requested and approved.
- Apply principles of universal precautions, biohazard, MSDS and laboratory safety to work environment.
- Participate in lab safety awareness projects and takes personal responsibility for workstation safety and ergonomics.
- Identify and report situations related to safety.
- Keep the welfare and confidentiality of the patient paramount at all times by following hospital and departmental policies regarding confidentiality.
- Organizing, planning, and prioritizing work. Develop specific goals and plans to prioritize, organize, and accomplish lab work.
- Establishing and maintaining interpersonal relationships. Develop constructive and cooperative working relationships with others, and maintain them over time.
